Ebola Outbreak in Uganda; Prevention & Shopping Advisory

The Ministry of Health recently declared an outbreak of Ebola Viral Disease in Uganda and so far more than 90 infections and 28 deaths have been reported. In Kampala alone, the health ministry has confirmed at least 14 cases of Ebola.

Ebola virus disease (EVD), formerly known as Ebola hemorrhagic fever, is a rare but severe, often fatal illness in humans. (WHO).

The virus is transmitted to people from wild animals and spreads in the human population through human-to-human transmission. Ebola has fatality rates of between 25% to 90%.

We urge you to take care of yourself, your family, your workmates, and your communities to avoid further spread and deaths resulting from the deadly Ebola virus.

Incubation & Symptoms

The incubation period from the time of infection with the virus to the onset of symptoms is from 2 to 21 days. A person infected with Ebola starts to spread the disease when they develop symptoms.

Symptoms of Ebola can be sudden and include Fever, Fatigue, Muscle pain, Headache & Sore throat. These are often followed by: vomiting, diarrhea, rash, symptoms of impaired kidney or liver function, and in some cases, both internal and external bleeding (for example, oozing from the gums, or blood in the stools).

Prevention of Ebola

There are no known vaccines against Ebola, yet. To protect yourself and your loved ones from the deadly Ebola virus, you need to observe the following as recommended by health professionals.

1. DO NOT touch people with signs of Ebola or who have died of Ebola.
2. Regularly wash your hands with soap.
3. DO NOT touch the clothes & bedclothes of people who have died of Ebola.
4. Cook your food properly.
5. DO NOT touch the vomit & saliva, urine, blood, and poo of people who have signs & symptoms of Ebola.
6. If you have symptoms such as cough, headache, fever, diarrhea, vomiting & red eyes, run to a health facility.
7. DO NOT play with Monkeys and baboons.
8. Keep your loved ones safe by not interacting with them in case you think you might be a contact with a case of Ebola.
9. DO NOT eat bush meat.
10. Tell everyone you meet about Ebola so they can be informed.
11. DO NOT eat fruits eaten by bats.
12. If you have symptoms of ebola do not use Boda Boda.
